Initial Plans for the COE Centennial Bared

The Centennial Ad Hoc Committee composed of the faculty and alumni gathered again tonight for the third time at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City to talk about the various activities lined up for the upcoming centennial celebration of the College of Engineering next year.

Initial plans were bared in today's meeting. There are several projects lined up to raise funds for the College. These are being spearheaded by Vic Sandoval for scholarship, Sid Consunji for faculty enhancement program and Mag Albarracin for the dormitory project.

The Memorabilia group shared its ideas on the items that will be prepared to commemorate this special occasion of the College. A coffee table book chronicling the history of Engineering, the most distinguished alumni and other important facts about the UP College of Engineering will be produced. The Memorabilia committee is composed of Rhod Gonzalez, Leony Liongson, Norbert Que and Mon Ramirez.

A retroactive Engg Week to reminisce on the traditional Engg Week activities of games and competitions will invite participation from the alumni. This is being organized by Aura Matias, Tony Castell together with the Enginering Student Council.

There are also plans to produce an electric jeepney to ply the Ikot route, thus the project is named as "E-kot". Spearheaded by Chito Francisco and Happy Denoga, it is a collaborative effort of the ME, MMM and IE Departments.

A design competition open to both alumni and non-alumni, and students will be conducted. The theme of the design will be on energy and the environment. It is being organized by Benny Pacheco and Joel Marciano.

There is also a program to improve the recuitment of the brightest high school students. This is being conceptualized by Val Reyes.

We encourage the participation of more alumni by joining in any of the committees. Let us all work together in coming up with a meaningful and memorable Centennial celebration. The next meeting will be held on August 10.

Junior Faculty Conference Held last May

On May 22 - 23, 2009, some 75 junior members of the Faculty participated in a Conference held in Makiling Highlands Resort in Pansol, Laguna. It was held to strengthen the bonds between our faculty members, and to re-orient ourselves on the Values that the University upholds.

It was graced by no less than the UP President herself, Dr. Emerlinda Roman. Instead of the usual straight talk, she gamely participated in a talk show format hosted by the very talented Matthew Dimal and Ayla Liberato. We also heard talks from Dean Guevara where she shared the output of the recently concluded system wide conference where the UP's vision in the next 100 years was tackled. Earlier, there was also a talk by the Dean of Education of Univeristy of Asia and the Pacific, Dr. Celerino Tiongco, who shared with us the findings of his study on the values and competencies required by the IT industry.

There were lots of fun activities packed in the Conference, giving our hardworking young faculty members a welcome break.

Witnessed by some College officials, it was graced by Mrs. Cheng, and daughter Peachy Medina, the wife and daughter respectively of Mr. Cheng. In their message, both daughter and mother said that their donation is one way of giving back the blessings that their family has received. Great believers in the value of education, they hope that their scholarship will be able to transform a student's life.

In her response, Dean Guevara shared the vision of the College in raising 1500 scholarships for financially challenged Engineering students. She expressed her gratitude to the family's generosity, making the donation the first of the 1500 that the College has to raise.
